We employ a number of techniques to portray topography, including contour lines, pictorial terrain, and shaded relief. Here is an example of the latter (click on this thumbnail view for a full-screen image).

Maps rendered in this form of relief shading can also be shown in perspective from any vantage point, or the viewer can be taken on a "fly-through" to view the terrain in a less abstract manner. Click here to view a brief Quicktime movie of this effect (300kb).
